By Cody J – B.O.C. April 24rd 2019

Habitat, climate, pressure, & predators are just a few factors that affect deer survival. Its a tough life as a deer always having to watch for predators every second of every day. Then they also struggle with avoiding vehicles, and having to deal with hunters during the season. So for a deer to survive what is considered a long life is quite difficult.

Well, a youth hunter in Vermont shot a doe during the 2018 hunting season that according to tooth analysis is 20 1/2 years old. Incredible. This deer tied the state record which was another doe that was aged at 20 1/2 years, that was killed in a car accident in 2016. The oldest bucks recorded in Vermont have been 12 1/2 years old.

The way they are able to age these deer through tooth analysis is that they start in the lab by slicing bands of the tooth and then counting the rings under a microscope. This method is 95% effective.

21 years ago when this doe was born, Titanic was released and spent 13 weeks at No.1, Seinfeld aired its final episode ever to 76 million viewers. Cher released her comeback single “Believe”, Furby was the most popular toy on the market, Apple released the iconic IMac Computer and Viagra was approved by the FDA. Two decades later a young youth hunter was able to harvest this mature doe. Time sure flies.
